"You wouldn't expect that a man of such great power and wickedness would be in the business of helping any person who requested it. But whether it makes any sense or not, that's the reputation the Dark Lord has If you approach the Dark Lord for help, he'll give you an answer and your goal will be achieved. The price is that his answer might violate the rules of righteous conduct. To put it another way, he's like an ancient wisewoman who lives in a high mountain cave and speaks in riddles, except that he's a villainous lord."

The country of Santal is perishing, and nobody knows why. His country's plight has driven Prince Nama over far roads to consult the famed Dark Lord for answers. On arriving there, he finds a mightily muscled sage in black armor, just as the stories say. And, chained to the Dark Lord's throne, a mysterious slave-woman with round ears. Round ears? There's nowhere in the world where people have round ears, is there?

Content warnings sexual abuse, economics.

I can see how the economic principles are meant to be taken, but they're pronounced unsupported as far too simplified and generic a way, and after a while I just started rooting against the author-mouthpiece. Also, the generic-medievalish setting is deeply unhistoric, which makes it worse. It reads like a Dungeons and Dragons setting, a full precious metal coinage society at that uneven level of development is more unrealistic than magic. It makes her confidently stating the strong efficient-market hypothesis in such a world hard to take seriously.

Dark Lord Answer edition by Eliezer Yudkowsky Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

If you want something kind of like 'Girl Corrupted by the Internet is the Chosen Hero?' and are willing to deal with its being not *quite* as good, then this works.
I like the book. This is certainly not Yudkowsky at his best, but it is still better than most books out there. It is informative, humorous and wise. I will still recommend it, being a Yudkowsky fan through and through.
This is a story about how not understanding economics can lead to numerous unintended consequences. Why do all beggars look somewhat alike? Why is the price of bread what it is? Why don't government incentives work? Why does Elaine get abused every night? Read and find out.
I liked it. A bit adult in places, given the low level of the economics theory, but still entertaining. It's very much "basic economics in drag" though. But it's good drag, so, there's that. )
It's Eliezer. This isn't the first thing of his you should read, so if you liked those, you'll probably like this, and if you didn't, you probably won't.

I saw both parts of the main twist coming a mile away. Partially because tropes; partially because it's Eliezer, and we know what he likes. Honestly, for all people complain, I love that he puts this much of himself into his writing. Somebody has to.

I don't know enough economics to agree or disagree with what was portrayed, but frankly, the concept of economics being important enough to discuss is missing from so much fiction that I still think it's a definite positive regardless.

Also, though I can't say it's particularly thorough, I did certainly enjoy the takedown of Virtue Ethics. The fundamental problem of Virtue Ethics is that it's like running on tropes, and even if they're smart tropes, they nevertheless do not generally have the ability to update.

Only complaint was that there wasn't more!
Okay, this is both very different, and at the same time EXACTLY what I would expect from Eliezer Yudkowsky. It's not his best work, but it does make the reader think about what is right and what is necessary. Give it a shot; if you like stories about rational, intelligent characters, you won't be disappointed.
The story is typical Yudkowskian fare packed full of typical Yudkowskian tropes. It is not as complex as his other writings. It explains some basic economics. I can't really delve further into it without spoiling it.

I'm not sure, but I think I felt like the main character was bland and stupid, without a personality, like the author intentionally tried to climb down quite a few statistical deviations and/or reduce his authorial voice. Maybe that's not a problem though. The other characters were good, with the other main character having more of the author's voice (again, could be good or bad).

If you've enjoyed his other writings, you'll probably like this (and the converse) - I did.
