Henry knew one thing…

Dames were trouble.

Would this client be the exception?

She walked in, sat down, crossed her legs, and asked for a light. Boy could she cross a leg. Before the woman had told him why she needed a detective, Henry wondered if she was playing him.

It was something about her. The red lips and smoldering eyes were just a little too perfect. She knew how to get her way. And the dress…

She wore a Dior dress that would make an hourglass self-conscious.

Was it the “damsel in distress” act?

This was the second one he’d seen this week.

Something wasn’t adding up.

1955 was going to be an interesting year.

You’ll love this noir mystery with a twist, because everyone loves a broken detective trying to do what’s right.

Get it now.

A nice mystery with a twist.....a closet where items arrive from the future. I enjoyed this book written
by Brian Meeks and encourage you to try it. His writing style was flawless. My only criticism, and it is a personal one, is that I hate when there are unanswered questions at the end of the book as there were in this one. I love sequels, but I don't like feeling like I have to buy more books in order to discover the answers.

Henry Wood is in the mix....personally. The author tries to make him hard boiled as his James Cagney put down of Sylvia, one of his growing gang, with "With listen here, sweetheart, etc., but he really is milk toast. His nice guy intellectual side keeps cropping up. The story is rather lacking characterization and most of his gang comes across rather flat. The writing style is simplistic and quite plain. The Mob he is pitted against is barely there in the writing.

Of course there are good points. The magic closet is a clever hook and I can see where this opens up a lot of literary possibilities. Ditto for the items that appear from the future. This is not a barn burner but good enough to keep reading and hope for a more complete and complex sequel.
I liked the pace to this mystery; it moved fairly quickly with a well planned route. Also, it was a real pleasure to read a novel without having to gag on "F" bombs leading one to utter distraction and disgust! Incredibly, a second pleasure awaits the readers ... Half the novel is not dedicated to the ubiquitous bedroom scenes beyond believability!
An exceptionally enjoyable read!
I enjoyed this story. There were a couple of things that were unexpected that didn't make a great deal of sense, since that part of the story was never explained, which was a little frustrating. The characters were somewhat developed. I don't know how to explain this without giving away too much of the story, but there was a particular aspect that was introduced that, because it was never developed, I don't know why it was in there. Same with a couple of characters. I expected that because of their strange actions, something would later be revealed about them, but it wasn't, so again, I'm not sure what the point was of introducing such a character. At any rate it was a good read with only a few typos. (Most books I've read have at least a few typos, unfortunately.)
I don't really know what to make of this book. A private detective in 50s New York is approached by a young woman whose father is missing because of something to do with an accounting journal. Another young woman then hires him to find the journal because it will besmirch her dead father. His cop buddy warns him the mafia is involved and back off. Oh and then there is a magic cabinet from the future! The magic cabinet contents are the only way this case gets solved. Even how the daughters find our PI is related to the future. None of this is explained. It was engaging tale and I enjoyed the end. But it was cheating with the bizarre cabinet.
Strange. Think of a great noir mystery, but then there is a magical closet that brings him woodworking tools from the future. ??? I actually had to read the paragraph 2 times to make sure I'd read it right... and then laughed out loud at the sudden, clumsy, and absurd addition of the time traveling carpentry closet. Not a bad story- but his transitions between the mystery solving PI, the time traveling carpentry tools, and descriptions of methods of woodworking make it a bit strange. Not bad, and kind of funny, but weird. The woodworking time travel closet have a personal history to the author- based on his woodworking blog- so if you know the history of why it's in there it becomes a little less ridiculous. But still a bit on the oddball side of mystery stories.
This is book 1 in the Henry Wood Detective series and I found it to be a typical dime store mystery novel easy to read and fairly short. I have also read Book 3 in the series and I do not think there was much different in the author’s presentation. There are fifty six short-short segments, not unlike a daily entry in a journal, in this book. This arrangement gives the impression of can be a distraction to the reader.
Lots of interesting characters and a simple mystery with a predictable ending is a good epitaph for this book. Would make a good TV mystery series; maybe.
Like his other book there is one line that stands out as the highlight and only remembered line, “She sat down and crossed her legs. Boy could she cross a leg.”
I gave the book a three star review and recommend it for a read while waiting for your plan, bus, or train. I probably will not read any more from this series
This is what could be a really nice read if not for a sudden appearance of a time travel closet that delivers tools? Really? I mean, it distracted me immensely from the otherwise decent detective story. As if the author felt his book needed something more than the mob and a detective solving a case the ordinary way.
Don’t get me wrong, if you forget about the closet and the non-story related clues, this is an old-fashioned detective story. Think Philip Marlow or any fifties mob and detective movie kind of story, but instead of doing old-fashioned detective work, he gets clues, which aren’t really clues at all, from a closet.
Like I said if not for that, it would be a decent read. The characters are well set, dialogue works like a charm. I could imagine them having their discussions and see the scenes. Nothing wrong there, but that silly closet that doesn’t really have a purpose as I suspected from the start.
